Calendula officinalis From Tina’s Garden
We are one with nature. Our bodies align with the food and herbs that grow all around us. Our beings do not align with man-made foods and chemicals. Some pharmaceuticals may work by masking symptoms, but they are not able to bring balance to our system. In fact, they create more side affects and health concerns, as seen on any drug disclaimer.
I always felt drawn toward natural healing and healthy eating. In my childhood years, I use to garden with my mother. We lived in a small house with a very large backyard that my mother used to successfully grow vegetables that would feed our family and keep us healthy. Gardening was a skill that I took with me and I am now a successful gardener growing my own food and herbs for medicine.
As a teenager, I would use herbs and essential oils that I learned about as I tried to do what I could to be the healthiest possible. My herbal education started in my twenties about twenty-five years ago in a three-year training program. I became a registered herbalist with the well-regarded professional organization, The American Herbalist Guild. I was trained in Western herbal medicine, essential oils and flower essences. I learned how to make my own medicine using the plants that grow around us.
The knowledge of an herbalist gives an individual autonomy in being able to recognize imbalances in our health and to bring balance without the need for dangerous pharmaceutical drugs for minor symptoms. The knowledge of an herbalist is profound. We know how to identify plants and herbs that grow around us and to make them into herbal medicines for healing.
The difference in using herbal medicines opposed to pharmaceutical drugs is that herbalists see the body as organ systems that work in concert together to bring balance to the entire system. Western medicine, conversely, sees all parts of the body as separate and not working together. Herbal medicines create balance to the whole, while pharmaceuticals target a change in one area of the body for a specific symptom.
I am grateful for my biology education giving me the knowledge to read, write, and understand scientific papers, but I see the mismatch in how we are treating beings of nature with chemicals. I encourage everyone to be a citizen scientist and become aware of all the knowledge that one can acquire to heal in the most natural way. There is an abundance of information on the Internet, as well as from books that is not taught in formal education systems.
In our knowledge as herbalists, we are able to be cautious with herbs that we may hear that are good for us. We are able to know whom an herb would benefit and when an herb may be harmful to another individual. Herbal medicines are generally safe and bring balance to our health when we are properly educated on how to use them.
The benefits of being an herbalist are many. It is knowledge that can only enhance a person’s life by giving them the gift of knowing how to bring balance to their overall health. Our knowledge as an herbalist helps us in every area of our lives. We see our lifestyles shift to match our knowledge of herbal medicine and it leads us to become balanced in mind, body and spirit.
In my upcoming herbal education series, I will be teaching the fundamentals of herbal medicine beyond what is taught as only learning an herb for a symptom.
